Cereals: A Planting and Harvest Calendar

Our cereal volumes shift with the seasons. Here’s a useful reference for understanding when our different grains are sown and then ready for sale.

Winter cereals

Wheat, winter barley, rye and triticale are sown in autumn, between September and November depending on the region. They overwinter in the ground and are harvested the following summer, generally between July and August — the most common pattern in northern France, where our farm is based.

Spring cereals

Maize, spring oat, spring barley and sorghum are sown from April to May, once the risk of frost has passed. Maize is harvested in autumn, between September and November depending on variety and target moisture content.

Niche cereals

Buckwheat and spelt, hardier and less input-intensive, have seen renewed interest for their nutritional qualities and their fit with low-input rotations. We offer more limited volumes of these, available in late summer.
